Summary:
The oil barge
Irving
Whale
sank in the Gulf of St. Lawrence in 1970 and was recovered in July 1996. The barge contained polychlorinated biphenyls (
PCB
) in its heating system and it is known that some
PCB
remained in the environment. This report presents findings of a survey of sediment and snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio, the major commercial fishing species in the vicinity of the recovery
site
) conducted in spring 1999 at and around the
Irving
Whale
site
to determine the extent of
PCB
contamination
. It also summarizes previously unpublished data from sampling conducted in 1998. Samples were collected from the barge footprint as well as from reference sites at distances up to 30 nautical miles. Samples were subjected to chemical analysis for
PCB
, amphipod & bacterial toxicity tests, and identification & enumeration of
benthic
invertebrates.
