Summary:
"Riding on the trail into
Maverick
Basin
, Hall McIvor is waylaid at gunpoint by Isham Scarborough and his brother Red and is taken on foot to a dark room in an abandoned cliff-dwelling to be questioned. The Scarboroughs are convinced the stranger is a gunfighter, riding to join the Bassett clan. If so, they intend to hang him right there. Telling them his name is Hall, the stranger admits that he is searching for someone, but will not reveal who it is, and insists that he is just riding through, that he has no knowledge of the Bassetts, has never heard of them. A hardcase is then brought into the makeshift prison and tied to a post. The two men are left alone. This newcomer claims his name is Wahoo Meshackatee, a name given him from his time as an Apache scout with the U.S. Army. The lower lobe of one of his ears has been sliced down and left hanging by a segment, what's known in the cattle country as a jinglebob. Meshackatee tells Hall he carries the mark as a result of being captured during a feud just like this one between the Scarboroughs and the Bassetts. His advice to Hall is to forego torture or death and simply join the Scarboroughs. If he does, Meshackatee will ride herd on him and protect him. Hall rejects this suggestion. He is from Kentucky and is accustomed to a moral code that would never allow him to join up with brutes like the Scarboroughs. He would rather die . . . "--p. [2] of cover
