Summary:
The Nova Scotia Adult Learning Program (ALP) is an outcomes-based education program. It has been designed to help adults develop a variety of essential skills needed to learn, live and work in their communities. Adults enrolled in the Program will be able to work toward any number of personal goals, which may include: improving reading, writing, oral communication, math, problem solving, critical thinking, and teamwork skills required to suceed at work and in the community, preparing to write the GED to further employment opportunities, earning Nova Scotia’s High School Diploma for Adults, or preparing to enter a post-secondary institution. The Adult Learning Program consists of four levels of courses from basic literacy to high school graduation. Although the levels do not equate to public school grades, it is generally accepted that a student completing:
Level
1 may be considered to have the same skills as a student completing grade 6;
Level
2 -- grade 8;
Level
3 -- grade 10, and
Level
4 -- grades 11 and 12.
Level
4 is made up of a number of distinct courses which adult learners can use toward the High School Diploma for Adults.
Level
3 has been designed for adults who need to improve their academic skills before entering
Level
4. It has also been used by many adult students to prepare to write the GED tests. Levels 1 and 2 have been designed for adults who need to develop a wide variety of reading, writing, math and basic science skills.
