MARC-8 Test Record / BiblioCommons Inc.
    by BiblioCommons Inc.
    URL856MARC-8 Code Tables.
    Notes:
This is a MARC-8 encoded record containing examples of characters from the MARC-8 character sets. Included are fields that use the Basic Latin (ASCII), Greek symbols, Subscripts, and Superscripts; the Extended Latin (ANSEL), Basic Arabic, Basic Hebrew, and East Asian code tables. Non-printing/combining characters are not included on their own, only in contextual examples. Also included are examples of Unicode characters notated to be MARC-8 compliant. One in the MARC21 specified Numeric Character Reference (NCR) method, and another in Horizon's method. This record isn't intended on fully representing all valid MARC-8 characters; it only provides a controlled reference record in MARC-8 encoding. This comes with a matching record encoded in UTF-8/Unicode.
This record cannot be converted to MARC21 XML, it has to be left as a binary MARC record to serve its control purposes. Editing the record in a text editor is not advised. If you do be aware that you'll need to update the leader and directory. If you are switching out characters, with a text editor in UTF-8 mode, you will need to insert the Unicode character with the equivalent MARC-8 hex value and insert that into this record; that is 'B2' Unicode superscript 2, will be Lowercase Scandinavian O. Remember that this record only supports single-byte characters. Multi-byte characters will need to be notated as their escaped MARC-8 equivalent. If using a MARC editor, it's likely you'll have to use the MARC character mnemonic strings for ANSEL and other characters. Check the editor's help file.
