    Summary:
"Jeff Nicklin was a star athlete from the Fort Rouge district of Winnipeg prior to World War II. He was born in Fort William, Ontario on December 10, 1914. He was a Free Press carrier boy for a number of years. Jeff was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Percy Nicklin. Percy Nicklin was a well-known athlete in Winnipeg who moved to England and became involved with the Harringay Racers and the White City Hockey organization. Jeff attended Mulvey Junior High School, Gordon Bell High School and Kelvin Technical High School. He was a star athlete for minor league teams in St. James, a suburb of Winnipeg. Prior to World War II, he was a goaltender for the Columbus Senior Hockey Club in Winnipeg. He was first employed as a manual labourer (shovelling coal) at the Manitoba Coke and Coal Plant. The purpose of volunteering for this job was to build up his muscular frame so that he could take part in athletics. Later, he was employed with the Manitoba Government in the Department of Mines and Natural Resources. Jeff was recruited by Reg Threlfall, coach of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, where he gained national prominence as the star player in the 1935 Grey Cup against Hamilton. He was employed as what was known in those days as a defensive end; later converted to flying wing, where he gained further prominence. Jeff joined the reserve battalion of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles in early 1940. He went overseas in 1941 as a reinforcement officer with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, taking over command of Baker Company of the Rifles. I was his second-in-command prior to his posting from the Royal Winnipeg Rifles to second-in-command of the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion."--War Amps.
