    Summary:
The book is about a series of unusual murders in "a town in a small Western state", the name of which is never revealed. Some people receive a package per mail, containing a small, handcarved coffin with a photo of them inside, taken candidly. Days or weeks after receiving the package, people become victims: a couple is bitten by ferocious rattle snakes; a man is decapitated by a wire strung athwart a road. The state bureau sends Detective Jake Pepper to investigate the case. Through a mutual friend, the situation comes to the attention of another man: Truman Capote himself, who is one of the main characters in the book, and whose curiosity drives him to visit Jake Pepper and learn more about the coffin murders. They suspect that there a connection between the victims, a motive to dispose of them. Soon Capote learns that Pepper had a suspect for a long while, although he is unable to pin him down unless he can find a proof. The story remains with Capote and Pepper until the final confrontation, which at the same time forms the open end of the book, an end apt for discussion.
