Travelling to Niagara Falls with his mother a year after the accident, they visit Damian's estranged uncle, a former daredevil of the falls who is slowly going blind, and his mentally disabled cousin, named after Elvis Presley, with the intention of scattering the girl's ashes. Damian distances himself from the family when he dives into an intense relationship with a girl he sees in the window of a tattoo parlour. The girl has her own memories to haunt her and has run away from home. In the sultry heat of summer, near to the Falls siren call, new and old wounds surface and lead to a misunderstood betrayal. A chain of events follows that takes the family from despair toward a course for the future. In assured, gorgeously descriptive prose, Anne Simpson captures both the beauty of the natural world and the tawdry eccentricity of Niagara Falls, while taking us deep into the hearts and minds of her strong-minded, wholly unique characters as they journey through loss and recovery.
