    Summary:
The Halifax Citizen's Advisory Committee, a volunteer group working with the Correctional Services of Canada identified a need to enhance support and communication with African Canadian offenders. In an effort to assist in identifying issues of this population, the CAC surveyed a number of Black offenders residing in the Halifax area. Those interviewed had previously been incarcerated in various peniteniaries. The CAC compiled information from the surveys and suggested that an educational or inspirational music CD may be helpful in bringing hope and a sense of pride and purpose to the African Canadian offenders under the authority of the CSC. In conjunction with the Nova Scotia Black Cultural Society the concept of an African Canadian musical journey was born. The "Circle of Life" CD utilizes historical Black proverbs, African drumming and the musical expertise of the Black community in Nova Scotia. The Circle of Life concept is based on historical Black teaching. The Circle of Life is comprised of four symbols, Wind, Water, Fire and Earth. Each symbol contains its own elements. Wind for example, contains the element of Pride, Adversity and Knowledge. Ancient wisdom requires each of these symbols to be present in an individual's life for a person to be whole. The "Circle of Life" CD is divided into four sections to reflect the symbols of Wind, Water, Fire and Earth. Each section contains songs and proverbs that relate to one of the four symbols. The listener may find that within one of the symbols something is found to compliment or enhance their life. They may find inspiration in a particular song, drum beat, or proverb or they may find inspirational value from the entire musical journey. The "Circle of Life" CD is intended to promote reflection on the change or changes the listener may wish to make in their life so that they may become whole. The Circle of Life is a gift of wisdom from African culture for all to enjoy.
