Summary:
"On June 24th 2010, the Mi’kmaq Nation will celebrate the four hundredth year anniversary in honouring one of its leaders of the Sante’ Mawiomi. Grand Chief Henri Membertou, of the Mi'kmaw Nation was the first Mi’kmaw man to be baptized into the Roman Catholic religion on June 24th, 1610. For many Mi’kmaq, this anniversary signifies the beginning of Mi’kmaq European Diplomacy, while to others, this historical event has a deep spiritual meaning. It has also been viewed as a political alliance that protected the Mi’kmaq in international law. In the Mi’kmaq world view, no individual story can accurately describe the complete historical picture.
Honoring
-
400
Years
- Kepmite’tmnej, is a book which celebrates the
400
year history by giving two separate accounts on Grand Chief Membertou’s covenant in the New World. The first, is a recollection that has been passed along through the generations of Mi’kmaq oral history, of which its teachings have been sustained by the Mi’kmaq Grand Council (Sante’ Mawio’mi). The second is taken from within the scope of a Catholic historian’s lens, whose story unfolds with the help of historical documents. The Sante’ Mawio’mi or Mi’kmaq Grand Council has been the cornerstone of Mi’kmaq diplomacy for more then four centuries, and has persevered to this day. As the original signatories for the covenant chain of Mi’kmaw treaties and other alliances, the Sante’ Mawiomi has a special place in the hearts of Mi’kmaq and all future discussion concerning Mi’kmaq rights. This book attempts not only to tell the story of
400
years
since the baptism of Chief Henri Membertou, but also gives the reader a glimpse into the
400
years
of Sante’ Mawio’mi governance both past and present." --Back cover.
